If you're an experienced trekker looking for a challenging route up Mount Kilimanjaro? The Shira Route might be a great choice for you. Starting at 3,600 meters, this route is very similar to the Lemosho Route, but with a higher starting point.
On the first day of the climb, you'll start at Shira Gate and head to Simba Camp before joining the Lemosho Route on day two at Shira Camp 2. While the higher starting point provides incredible views, it can also be a major drawback. Many climbers experience altitude sickness from day one without enough time to acclimate properly.
Despite this challenge, the Shira offers a unique trekking experience over the Shira Plateau with several possible variations. After Shira Camp 2, the route joins the Machame Route via Lava Tower and descends to the Barranco Camp via the Southern Circuit. The ascent to Uhuru Peak is made via Barafu Camp and up the southern slopes of Kibo.
As with any climb on Kilimanjaro, it is essential to prepare adequately and acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness. Climbing with a licensed guide and trekking agency is highly recommended for safety and support throughout the climb.
By choosing the Shira Route, you'll have the opportunity to experience the unique beauty of Mt.Kilimanjaro from a different perspective, and conquer one of the world's most magnificent peaks. Lets talk and plan your adventure.
